Thank your for taking the time to write our office regarding the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act being replicated in Canada. The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry, and the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, are working closely to determine the appropriate next steps with respect to copyright reform, and technological protection measures.
The Copyright Act must continue to support innovation and research while reflecting current technological realities. The Act must also provide adequate protection for copyright holders while promoting access to copyrighted material.
The Government of Canada wants to protect the rights of creators and rights holders.
Our government knows it must quickly move forward with the reform of copyright legislation. Copyright reform is complex and the government wants to strike the right balance.
